The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Edward Okorie from Isiugwu, Ohafia, over the alleged killing of his girlfriend, a nurse identified as Sophy Chika, during a domestic altercation.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday at Isiugwu in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. The deceased, said to be from Ozu Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, was allegedly involved in a dispute with her boyfriend before the situation escalated.
Sources in the community disclosed that the couple had been living together in Okagwe village, Ohafia, for more than three years before the tragic incident. According to a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, an argument between the pair turned violent, leading to the nurse’s death.
“The incident happened in the early hours of Monday at Isiugwu, Ohafia. They had a misunderstanding, which reportedly escalated, and she was allegedly beaten to death,” the source said.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the suspect had been apprehended and would be transferred for further investigation.
She stated that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia alerted the command to the incident and that the case would be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia for a comprehensive probe.
“Yes, the attention of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ohafia, was drawn to the incident. The suspect has been apprehended, and the case will be transferred to the SCID by the DPO,” Chinaka said.
She assured residents that the command had commenced investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The development has thrown the Abam community into mourning, with residents calling for justice and a thorough investigation into the alleged killing.
