The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested Mr Alexander Ikwechegh, the House of Representative member who was caught on camera assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya on Sunday.
It would be recalled that the law-breaking lawmaker hit the headlines on Sunday after a video of him battering the driver surfaced.
The Abia North and South Federal Constituency representative boasted that he could make Abuwatseya disappear anywhere in Nigeria while boasting that not even the Inspector General of Police could make him account for the crime.
“Do you know who I am I just slapped you and there’s nothing you will do. My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, tell them (public) I slapped you. Call the Inspector General of Police that I slapped you, let him come. Record me very well,” he boasted.
A human rights group, Take It Back Movement called for the arrest of the lawmaker, whom it described as dishonourable.
“We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of House of Rep member Alex Ikwechegh over the assault of the hustling Abuja Uber driver. The dishonourable Rep member must be asked to explain the number of innocent Nigerians he has caused to disappear without a trace,” the group said in a post on its X account.
A slide of the video footage showed Ikwechegh ranting at the driver, “Do you know who I am? I can make this man (driver) disappear in the whole of Nigeria and nothing will happen. Can you imagine this rat? I am not going to give this boy one naira of my money.
“I am not going to call my policemen to beat you up, I will do that myself. I will show that I am a big brother to you, tie you up, lie you down and put you in my generator house. Do you know where you are? Because you saw me sitting outside here. Look at this monkey.”
Ikwechegh reportedly refused to pay the driver, saying he wouldn’t give the ‘rat’ his money when slapping him.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said in a statement on Monday evening that an investigation had commenced into the matter.
She added that already, preliminary investigation revealed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery.
Adeh said, “Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
