The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Wisdom Onyeaju, in connection with the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl, a case that recently sparked outrage after details went viral on social media.
The command also announced that police officers accused of professional misconduct in the handling of the matter have been identified and detained.
The arrest followed a video posted on January 3 by the victim’s sister, in which she alleged that the suspect forcefully gained access to the girl’s home during the Christmas period, threatened her with a knife and sexually assaulted her. The video also alleged that officers at a police station near the Government House in Owerri demanded N100,000 from the family before agreeing to take the victim’s statement, a claim that drew widespread public condemnation.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, said Onyeaju, a resident of Umuekweye, Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area, was arrested in connection with the alleged offence.
According to the statement, the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing a thorough investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The police said he would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command further disclosed that the officers accused of misconduct have been identified and detained, adding that an orderly room trial has been scheduled to commence on Monday, January 12, 2026, in line with extant police regulations.
The police reiterated their commitment to professionalism, transparency and accountability, assuring the public that justice would be served in the case.
