The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened a late-night National Caucus meeting on Wednesday at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
The closed-door session, which commenced at 9:00 p.m., was presided over by the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum. In attendance were key party stakeholders, including Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau). Also present were former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi; former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Bode George; and several members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and Board of Trustees (BoT).
Party insiders revealed that discussions centered on several critical issues, including the zoning formula for the 2027 presidential ticket, preparations for the upcoming national convention, and growing concerns over security.
“The zoning of the presidential ticket is a sensitive issue that requires deliberate and inclusive consultation,” a source familiar with the meeting disclosed.
The caucus also addressed internal party cohesion amid recent defections to opposition parties, notably the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing the need to reinforce unity and stability within the party ranks.
Heightened security concerns were another focus, following the recent assassination attempt on Jude Ezenwafor, the PDP’s governorship candidate in Anambra State.
“The safety of our members remains a top priority,” the source added.
Outcomes from this meeting are expected to significantly influence deliberations at the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday.
