Governors and top figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are holding a closed-door meeting in Abuja to confront the party’s growing internal turmoil and wave of defections.
The strategic session, convened by the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, is seen as a critical step in charting the party’s course ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hosted at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, the meeting brings together current and former governors as well as influential stakeholders within the PDP.
Among those in attendance are Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum; Governor Ademola Adeleke (Osun); Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau); former governors Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Achike Udenwa (Imo).
Sources say top on the agenda is addressing the party’s internal crisis, which has fueled defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The leaders are expected to explore ways to restore unity and cohesion within the party ranks to position it strongly for the 2027 polls.
Ongoing disputes within the PDP’s National Working Committee are also up for discussion, particularly regarding the leadership roles of the National Secretary and the Acting Chairman.
The meeting is likely to shape the PDP’s electoral strategy, with talks expected on coalition prospects versus internal consolidation, and plans for the upcoming Anambra governorship election.
As the meeting continues, its outcome is expected to significantly influence the party’s direction in the coming years.
