There is palpable tension in the Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State following an attack by unknown gunmen, which led to the death of several policemen, in the early hours of Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses’ accounts indicated that the incident occurred around 7:30 am in the Ebem and Asaga areas, where several policemen were killed.
Although details remain sketchy at the time of this report, eyewitnesses say the area has been deserted as residents fled in fear of reprisal attacks from security operatives and indiscriminate arrests by the police.
This tragic event comes just two days after two police officers attached to Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives, were ambushed by gunmen in Umuahia, on Sunday.
One officer died, the other was injured, while the driver narrowly escaped.
The state police command is yet to comment on the latest incident.
