Naija Daily News projects candidate of the All Progressive Congress and incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has all but won Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The APC candidate has taken an unassailable lead in the results of 15 out of the 18 LGAs in the state that have been released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on its IReV portal.
Aiyedatiwa has won Okitipupa, Akoko South-west, South-east, North-west, Ose, Owo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Ondo East, Idanre, Akure North and South, Ondo.
Results from Ilaje, Odigbo, and Ese-Odo are still being awaited, but it is unlikely that figures from those areas would sway the election in the incumbent’s opponents’ favour, especially considering that the frontrunner is from Ilaje LGA.
He has also garnered 301,113 votes in those LGAs, meaning that he has secured the mandatory 2/3 votes in 2/3 of the 18 LGAs (12 LGAs).
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Agboola Ajayi is second with less than a 3rd of Aiyedatiwa’s vote, but has not won any LGA so far.
The Nigerian electoral law makes it mandatory that to emerge as the winner, a candidate must not only secure the highest number of votes but must win at least 25 per cent of the votes in no fewer than two-thirds (12) of the state’s 18 local government areas (LGAs).
Mr Aiyedatiwa is from Ilaje Local Government, while Mr Ajayi is from Ese-Odo Local Government. Based on the overall voter turnout in the election, it is unlikely that the remaining three local governments will change the trajectory of the election.
INEC had earlier announced the results for 13 local government areas before taking a recess of about three hours. When the collation resumed, results from two more local government areas were announced in the early hours of Sunday.
