The traditional ruler of the Barako Ancient Community in Rivers State, Kadilo Kabari, has called for the full implementation of the Ogoni Bill of Rights, justice, and compensation for the Ogoni people.
This demand was made during the Uula-Mii Giaa/Lol-Giaa Tor Festival, which marks the start of the new planting season in Ogoniland.
In his statement released on Sunday, Kabari emphasized the need to address historical injustices, including clearing the names of the Ogoni Four, reconciling bereaved families, exonerating the Ogoni Nine, and compensating those lost during the dark days, particularly Keesiop Gboro Aakol, a son of Barako.
He also called for the resumption of oil exploration at Yormene Well 13 in the Bomu oil fields in Boowaa and offered land for the development of gas-powered energy infrastructure, citing Barako’s vast gas reserves. Kabari stressed that revitalizing the community health center and reintroducing scholarships for Barako students would help meet the community’s needs.
The monarch also noted the heavy rainfall during the festival, symbolizing spiritual approval of the community’s proclamations. He further highlighted the cultural significance of Barako, home to the revered Gbooro and the sacred Bina drums, which confirm warriors and kings.
Kabari’s call underscores the need for justice, development, and the proper use of resources to improve the lives of the Ogoni people and heal the wounds of the past.
