Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has committed to implementing the findings of the state’s Assets Verification Committee, which reviewed government assets and liabilities.

He expressed appreciation for the committee’s dedication and assured that their recommendations would be acted upon, stating, “Rest assured, your findings and recommendations will be fully implemented.”

Committee Chairman, Dr Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, presented the report, highlighting its importance in promoting accountability and better asset management in the state: “This report marks a critical moment for Edo State, urging us to take stock of our financial position and steer towards greater accountability.”

The report, according to a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, detailed Edo State’s assets, debts, contracts, and financial obligations, revealing concerns about mismanagement, resource allocation issues, and misuse of consultants.

The committee identified significant financial burdens from the previous administration and recommended reviewing certain contracts to protect the state’s interests.

Umakhihe said it also uncovered evidence of financial misconduct and called for further investigations and accountability, emphasising, “We strongly recommend that the relevant authorities investigate and prosecute those found responsible.”

Additionally, the report suggested re-evaluating government leases and agreements for fairness and economic benefit, as well as scrutinizing corporate entities with unclear ownership linked to past administrations.

Governor Okpebholo assured that his administration would take swift action to address these issues and promote transparency and responsible governance.

“My administration is committed to ensuring integrity in governance and prudent management of state resources,” he concluded.
