The Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy welcomed Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Gates Foundation, along with senior delegates including Paulin Basinga, Uche Amaonwu, and Bunmi Okunowo, for a high-level engagement centered on advancing Nigeria’s innovation and digital development goals.

This visit follows an earlier dialogue between Dr. Bosun Tijani and Mr. Gates—joined by young African innovators—where artificial intelligence was identified as a transformative priority. Building on that momentum, today’s discussions focused on two strategic pillars of Nigeria’s digital future: expanding connectivity and harnessing the power of AI.

A key milestone of the day was the signing of an agreement to establish the Nigerian AI Scaling Hub, supported by up to $7.5 million in funding and technical support from the Gates Foundation. The Hub is designed to accelerate the deployment of AI solutions in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and education, delivering meaningful impact to Nigerians in the near term.

In his remarks, Dr. Tijani emphasized the significance of the initiative, both personally and nationally. “This marks a defining moment for us,” he said. “We’re not just adopting technology—we’re actively shaping it to meet our unique challenges and realize Nigeria’s full potential under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The Gates Foundation’s commitment reflects growing global confidence in Nigeria’s innovation landscape and reinforces the Tinubu-Shettima administration’s vision of a digitally empowered economy built on local talent, inclusive access, and homegrown innovation.
