Tension is high in the Amaimo community of Ikeduru Local Government Area, Imo State, following the alleged shooting to death of a teenage male by a Catholic priest over a fireworks incident in church.
Reverend Father Joseph Eyinnanya of St Columbus Catholic Church reportedly shot the unnamed teenager dead because he threw fireworks (bangers) within the church premises.
One source said, “During the crossover celebrations, people were shooting bangers (fireworks), and the boy threw one into the church premises.”
Various sources said the priest, angered by the boy’s actions, picked up his firearm and shot the boy, killing him on the spot.
“The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, with residents expressing outrage and demanding a thorough investigation to uncover the facts behind the unfortunate event,” the post added.
The Imo Police Command confirmed hearing about the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, told Punch newspaper, “We have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. Further developments on the case will be communicated in due course.”
NDN gathered that the trigger-happy clergy has been arrested and is cooling his heels in a police cell.
