A tragic incident occurred during a drug bust by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the notorious Ama Hausa enclave of Bonny Island, Rivers State, as Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid lost his life.

Mujahid died from severe head injuries inflicted during a violent confrontation with armed hoodlums mobilized by drug dealers in an attempt to thwart the operation. Despite the attack, NDLEA operatives successfully arrested six suspects, including the gang leader, Genesis George Benson, who is believed to be responsible for the officer’s death.

The operation, which took place on Friday, February 6, 2026, also led to the recovery of a significant haul of illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk, and tramadol.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA spokesperson, confirmed the raid’s tragic outcome, stating that despite being rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital for emergency treatment, Mujahid succumbed to his injuries.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the bravery of the operatives who continued their mission despite the attack. “The sacrifice of Chief Narcotic Agent Mujahid will not be in vain,” Marwa said, offering his condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues. He also vowed that any attack on NDLEA personnel would have severe consequences, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to fighting drug trafficking across Nigeria.
