The average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, rose by 7.69% in April 2025, reaching ₦7,885.60—up from ₦7,322.49 in March, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Similarly, the price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder climbed by 9.82%, increasing from ₦18,456.24 in March to ₦20,268.06 in April.

The figures were disclosed in the NBS’s monthly report titled “Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch”, released on Monday.

Year-on-Year Increase

On an annual basis, the price of a 5kg cylinder rose by 20.92%, up from ₦6,521.58 in April 2024. The 12.5kg cylinder saw an even sharper increase of 29.61% year-on-year, rising from ₦15,637.74.

State-by-State Breakdown

Among states, Rivers recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at ₦9,103.82, followed by Ebonyi (₦8,867.24) and Akwa Ibom (₦8,655.59). The lowest prices were seen in Niger (₦7,006.15), Plateau (₦7,014.87), and Kebbi (₦7,032.11).

For the 12.5kg cylinder, Imo recorded the highest average retail price at ₦22,938.73, followed by Delta (₦22,831.70) and Rivers (₦22,759.56). The most affordable rates were found in Kebbi (₦18,080.27), Nasarawa (₦18,106.85), and Kwara (₦18,173.67).

Zonal Analysis

At the regional level, the South-South zone recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at ₦8,447.78, closely followed by the South-East (₦8,351.29). The North-Central zone had the lowest average price at ₦7,432.22.

For the 12.5kg cylinder, the South-South led again with an average price of ₦21,536.12, slightly ahead of the South-East at ₦21,528.23. The North-Central posted the lowest zonal average at ₦19,330.55.

March 2025 Recap

In March 2025, Sokoto recorded the highest 5kg LPG refill price at ₦8,157.38, followed by Rivers (₦8,085.92) and Taraba (₦8,056.75). Kebbi (₦6,336.28), Oyo (₦6,684.31), and Kwara (₦6,728.09) reported the lowest prices.

For the 12.5kg refill, Rivers again led with ₦20,964.79, followed by Cross River (₦20,934.23) and Akwa Ibom (₦20,623.80). The lowest prices were in Nasarawa (₦15,661.30), Kebbi (₦15,840.70), and Oyo (₦16,710.77).

Zonal data from March also showed the South-South had the highest average 12.5kg refill price at ₦20,203.66, followed by the South-East (₦19,138.43), while the North-Central had the lowest at ₦17,296.65.

Inflation Update

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased to 23.71% in April 2025, down from 24.23% in March, according to NBS. This marks a 0.52 percentage point decrease, signaling a slight slowdown in price increases amid ongoing economic pressures.

On a month-on-month basis, inflation stood at 1.86% in April, down significantly from 3.90% in March, indicating a slower pace of price increases during the month.
