The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association was thrown into mourning on Saturday following the killing of its Kwara State leader, Alhaji Idris Abubakar Sakaina, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen.
Various reports say Sakaina was gunned down close to his home in Oke Ose of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The 32-year-old Sakaina was a Special Assistant to the Chairman of Moro Local Government and served as the Youth Leader of the Fulani community in Kwara.
His death is suspected to be an assassination because his shooters fled the scene without taking any of his possessions.
“They killed and left him in the pool of his blood but they did not steal anything from him. This is creating concerns and suspicions that his killers were assassins,” one witness said.
Aina’u Sarki, a witness, who was one of the last persons to see him alive, revealed that she had been with Sakaina just 20 minutes before the attack.
A report by Daily Trust newspaper, said the Special Assistant to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Inter-Community Relations for the Fulani, confirmed the incident on Sunday morning.
“Yes, he was killed outside his residence by gunmen who left him to die. We are currently making preparations for his janaza. The police have already begun investigating the matter,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Adetoun, confirmed the report in a statement issue on Sunday afternoon.
She said: “Police detectives responded swiftly and recovered five expended 7.62mm shells, his remains have been deposited at UITH Mortuary. “The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has commenced a full investigation.
“CP Victor Olaiya, psc(+) assures that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and urges the public to remain calm and provide useful information.”
