Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has acquired Play AI, a startup focused on developing AI-generated, human-like voices, in a move aimed at accelerating its push into audio content and voice-based technologies.
The acquisition was confirmed by a Meta spokesperson, as reported by Bloomberg. As part of the deal, Play AI’s entire team will join Meta next week, bolstering the tech giant’s efforts across its suite of AI-powered products.
An internal memo obtained by Bloomberg outlined the strategic value of the acquisition, noting that Play AI’s technology—particularly its platform for generating natural-sounding voices—aligns closely with Meta’s roadmap for AI Characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The Play AI acquisition is the latest in a string of aggressive moves by Meta to expand its AI capabilities. In late June 2025, Meta made headlines with its $14.3 billion investment for a 49% stake in Scale AI, a leading data infrastructure provider for AI model training.
As part of that deal, Scale AI’s co-founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang, joined Meta as Chief AI Officer and head of the newly established Meta Superintelligence Labs—a division created to unify and accelerate Meta’s AI initiatives.
Wang, who co-founded Scale in 2016, grew the company into a critical supplier for AI development, serving high-profile clients like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and the U.S. Department of Defense. By 2024, Scale AI had reached a valuation of $13.8 billion.
Meta is also intensifying its efforts to recruit top-tier AI talent. According to Bloomberg, the company recently hired Jack Rae, a principal researcher from Google DeepMind, and has been actively courting talent from OpenAI—reportedly offering signing bonuses as high as $100 million.
However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed in a podcast that none of his key staff had accepted Meta’s offers. He questioned whether Meta’s corporate culture was conducive to the kind of deep, mission-driven innovation that attracts and retains top AI researchers.
While Meta has not publicly responded to the remarks, the company’s rapid AI investments and high-profile hires signal a clear ambition: to be at the forefront of the next generation of AI technologies, from audio to superintelligence.
