The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man, Alhaji Hassan Umaru, for allegedly killing his wife’s suspected lover with a machete over an alleged extramarital affair.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Bundila village, Gulani Local Government Area, where the victim, 45-year-old Sukari Abdul, was reportedly attacked by Umaru at the local market. According to the police, Umaru inflicted fatal injuries to Abdul’s neck with a sharp cutlass.
“Personnel of the Bara Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly responded and rushed the victim to Bularaba Primary Health Care Facility for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead by a medical practitioner,” the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said in a statement on Monday. The suspect was immediately apprehended, and the weapon was recovered.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, warned the public against taking the law into their own hands in resolving social or marital disputes. He urged individuals to report grievances to the appropriate authorities, reiterating that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
