A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Sunday Gmaed, to three months in prison for stealing seven chickens worth N57,000.
Chief Magistrate Kehinde Awosika handed down the sentence on Friday after Gmaed changed his plea to guilty and appealed for leniency. The court, however, offered him an option of a N30,000 fine.
Earlier, police prosecutor Insp. Elijah Adejare told the court that the theft occurred on June 28 at about 9:30 a.m.
Gmaed was said to have broken into a poultry farm in Odo village along Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, by cutting through a net and strangling the chickens belonging to one Olaniyi Olasehinde.
The offence contravenes Section 302(1)(a) of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
Gmaed was initially arraigned on July 2 and pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety.
However, at his next court appearance on July 11, he changed his plea to guilty.
