The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Mutawakilu Ibrahim, for allegedly stabbing his grandparents to death during an argument over food at their residence in Kofar Dawanau Quarters, Dala Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a statement on Thursday, said the tragic incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. and was reported at the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters.
According to the police, Ibrahim, suspected toF have been under the influence of intoxicants at the time, attacked his grandfather, Muhammad Dansokoto, 75, and grandmother, Hadiza Tasidi, 65, with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds.
The victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where doctors confirmed them dead on arrival. Their remains were later released to family members for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for further investigation.
“The suspect will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation,” Kiyawa said.
The killings add to growing concerns over violent crimes within family settings in Kano. Experts and community leaders have repeatedly linked such cases to widespread drug abuse, mental health challenges, and economic hardship.
Authorities and civil society organisations have also warned that the rising use of illicit substances among youths and young adults in the state continues to fuel violent behaviour and deadly domestic disputes.
