The Umuokoro Egbelu Etiti Autonomous Community, located in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, has exiled one of its natives, Mr. Ndukuba Nwogwugwu, following his refusal to assume the role of Chief Priest of the Ikpeghiebe Shrine, the community’s traditional deity.

Nwogwugwu, 35, a professional truck driver and devout member of the Assemblies of God Church, turned down the appointment, citing his Christian beliefs, which strictly forbid participation in traditional religious practices.

His decision reportedly infuriated community members, who allegedly resorted to threats and intimidation in an effort to coerce him. The situation escalated violently when a mob attacked his residence, destroying properties including a tipper truck valued at over ₦50 million.

Speaking from an undisclosed location, Nwogwugwu recounted that the attackers had intended to kill him. Though he managed to escape, he has been left homeless and displaced, now living as a refugee.

When it became evident he would not change his stance, the community responded by formally banishing him and his family.

“I will never accept to be the Chief Priest of the Ikpeghiebe Shrine under any condition,” Nwogwugwu insisted. “It goes against everything I believe in as a Christian. I’ve never had any involvement with the shrine and don’t understand why I was chosen. I believe this is a calculated attempt by my enemies to ruin me and my family.”

His maternal uncle, Chief Gideon Lambert, condemned the community’s actions as unjust and inhumane. He revealed that steps are being taken to protect and support Nwogwugwu and his loved ones.

“I am grateful to a compassionate clergy friend who has offered them temporary shelter,” Chief Lambert added.
