Operatives of the Nigerian Police in Anambra have arrested one Nnamdi Nnebe, who allegedly attempted to stab his elder brother’s wife, Mrs Njideka Nnebe, to death in Awka.

The victim told newsmen in her sickbed that trouble broke out between her and the suspected over a tricycle (keke), which the suspect said her children were playing around.

A fight ensued when the suspect tried to attack the victim’s son.

Nnebe said that she quickly moved with the help of her daughter to defend her son, prompting the suspect to run into the family house and appear with a “daga” (local jackknife).

She added that when the suspect aimed the daga at her shoulder, she had no alternative but to defend herself with her bare hands.

“That was when the knife pierced my right elbow to the other side,” she said.

The State Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, who visited the victim in the hospital vowed to “follow up this case and insist that justice is served to serve as a deterrent to other people who may want to engage in such a dastardly acts”.

“This case will not be treated as a mere family issue, we will make sure that the right thing is done. Nobody has the right to inflict this kind of injury on anyone, even if the person is your wife.

“Therefore, we are going to charge him with attempted murder, so that other people will not try such a thing again,” she said.

The commissioner queried the reason behind the attempt by the suspect to kill his brother’s wife over a mere family altercation, stressing that the culprit must face the full wrath of the law.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that the command was aware of the matter.

Ikenga said that the suspect was in police custody and would be charged in court at the end of ongoing investigations.
