Tragedy struck Amaji village in Umuoyoro community, Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday after a man identified as Mr. Abuchi was arrested for allegedly killing his wife during a domestic dispute.

Sources said the incident occurred on the couple’s farm in Amaji, where an argument reportedly escalated. In the heat of the confrontation, the suspect allegedly reached for a kitchen knife and slit the throat of his wife, a mother of two.

A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the woman’s screams drew the attention of nearby residents.

“People got to know because the woman was screaming before she died. It was that scream that attracted other natives around the farm. They gathered, overpowered the man and held him to the ground,” the source said.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspect.

“Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter with a view to ensuring timely justice,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign (CBRAC) condemned the killing, describing it as the height of inhumanity.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Prince Wiro, the group called on the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is served.

“I condemn the killing of the mother of two children in Amaji village in Omuma allegedly by her husband. It is the height of man’s inhumanity to man and wickedness,” Wiro said.

“There is no justification for anyone to take another person’s life. This is a clear case of murder and it should be treated as such.”
