Legal practitioners have called for an immediate investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central Senatorial District. The lawyers described the claim as serious, noting the gravity of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegation that she was being victimized after rejecting sexual advances from Akpabio.

The legal professionals emphasized that the issue must not be ignored, stressing that the burden of proof lies with the Kogi lawmaker. Chief Chukwuma Nwachukwu, a human rights lawyer, said, “This matter should not be dismissed as usual in politics. Sexual harassment must be taken seriously, as women deserve full legal protection.”

He added that Akpoti-Uduaghan, who made the serious accusation, must provide evidence, as the law requires the accuser to substantiate claims. Nwachukwu further stated, “If proven, the Senate system must be reformed, and safeguards must be established to prevent such incidents.”

Another lawyer, Mr. Albert Effiong, urged the Federal Government to set up an independent panel for the investigation, as Akpabio should not oversee it. He suggested that Akpabio step down temporarily to ensure fairness. “One cannot judge their own case,” he remarked.

Effiong expressed disappointment over the situation, noting the embarrassment caused by both the accuser and accused being senior legal professionals.

Mr. Obeta Williams, meanwhile, criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for publicizing the allegation, suggesting she should have pursued internal channels instead. He concluded, “This issue has tarnished the Senate’s reputation and brought national shame, as Nigeria is trending for the wrong reasons.”
