The Kwara State Government on Wednesday directed the immediate closure of schools across four local government areas following heightened security threats in parts of the state.

The directive was announced by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State wing, in a circular issued by its chairman, Yusuf Agboola, and obtained by Channels Television.

According to the circular, schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun and Ekiti LGAs are to shut down without delay, based on instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.

Agboola explained that the government raised concerns over emerging security threats in Kwara South, prompting the closure as a precautionary measure.

“Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and, through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice,” the circular stated.

“This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation. Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry.”

The NUT assured teachers and school heads that further directives would be communicated as developments unfold.
