Detectives of the Ondo State Police Command have apprehended a suspected kidnapper, identified as Godspower Cletus, shortly after he attempted to withdraw part of a ransom allegedly extorted from the husband of his victim. The arrest took place at a POS kiosk where the suspect was reportedly trying to access the funds.
The incident that led to his arrest began in Odudu community, Akure, where Mrs. Farimoyo Endurance was attacked inside her home. According to police sources, Cletus allegedly forced his way into the residence armed with a gun, dispossessing her of her Android phone and ATM card. He then compelled the frightened woman to place a call to her husband, during which he issued a ransom demand of ₦5 million.
Under pressure and fearing for his wife’s safety, the husband transferred ₦1 million into her Opay account an amount the suspect believed was sufficient to flee without further suspicion. Once he confirmed the alert, Cletus abandoned the scene, assuming the operation had been successfully concluded.
However, detectives from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad had already launched a discreet investigation. Intelligence-led tracking eventually pinpointed the suspect’s location, culminating in his arrest while attempting to withdraw the ransom money.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the development, stating that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation. He noted that investigators are now broadening their probe to determine whether Cletus acted alone or is connected to other criminal networks operating in the state.
Olayinka praised the officers involved in the operation, describing their swift coordination and accuracy as evidence of the Command’s heightened readiness and improved capacity to respond to emerging security threats. According to him, the arrest underscores the police’s commitment to dismantling kidnapping syndicates and preventing further attacks on residents.
