Security forces operating under the Joint Task Force South East have dismantled what authorities described as a key operational base used by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) South East, Operation UDO KA (OPUK), told Naija Daily News that they scored a hard fought victory in the area described as a major stronghold of the IPOB armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN)

The operation took place on February 26 in a dense forest area known locally as “Mother Valley” in Nkwere, Anambra State. According to military sources, the location had allegedly served as a coordination hub for armed activities in the region.

Troops reportedly navigated challenging terrain for several hours before confronting armed occupants of the camp. Security officials said the suspects attempted to repel the advance using gunfire and improvised explosive devices.

After the exchange, one suspected member of the group was killed, while others fled the scene, some believed to have sustained injuries.

Weapons and materials recovered from the site included pump-action shotguns, a locally assembled firearm, a tear gas launcher and gas cylinders said to be used in fabricating explosive devices. Flags associated with the separatist movement were also seized.

Authorities said they dismantled infrastructure within the camp, including power sources such as solar panels and a generator, in what they described as a move to disrupt future operations.

In a separate action linked to the operation, two suspects were arrested — one allegedly caught attempting to plant an explosive device and another accused of providing intelligence on troop movements. Security operatives also impounded two vehicles found within the area.

The military said follow-up clearance operations are ongoing to secure surrounding communities and prevent regrouping.

The latest development comes amid sustained security efforts across the Southeast aimed at curbing violent activities attributed to armed separatist elements.
