Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) two months after his expulsion from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Jibrin, a former ally of NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso, was removed from the party in September for alleged anti-party activities and failure to pay membership dues. His defection had been widely expected due to his close ties with President Bola Tinubu.

Announcing the move on Monday via social media, Jibrin said his supporters had resolved to leave both the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement to back Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

“In a show of solidarity, I was warmly received by thousands of my constituents in Kofa, Bebeji. The gathering resolved to leave the NNPP/Kwankwasiyya, join the APC, and endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term,” he wrote.

He added that about 2,000 Islamic clerics from his constituency offered prayers for the president, and for peace and development in Kano State and across Nigeria.

In a video shared from the event, Jibrin said he chose to defect with his supporters to “correct the mistake” of switching parties alone in the past.
“I don’t want anyone to say I don’t have supporters,” the fourth-term lawmaker said.
