In a bid to deepen cultural ties, boost economic cooperation, and address domestic labor challenges, the Japanese government has officially designated the city of Kisarazu as the “hometown” for Nigerians seeking to live and work in Japan.

The announcement came during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), where similar designations were also made for Tanzania (Nagai), Ghana (Sanjo), and Mozambique (Imabari).

As part of the initiative, Japan will introduce a special visa program targeting highly skilled, innovative, and talented Nigerian youth. Artisans and blue-collar workers willing to upskill will also be eligible under this new visa category.

“This arrangement aims to foster exchange and build a foundation for workforce development that will drive growth in both Japan and Nigeria,” said Mrs. Florence Akinyemi Adeseke, Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires and Acting Ambassador to Japan.

Kisarazu’s selection builds on its historical connection with Nigeria, notably serving as a training base for the Nigerian Olympic team ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Mayor Yoshikuni Watanabe, who received the official certificate alongside Mrs. Adeseke, welcomed the designation, saying it would help revitalize the city and boost its population.

At TICAD9, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba unveiled a $5.5 billion investment plan for Africa, emphasizing private sector-led growth, youth and women empowerment, and regional integration.

“Japan seeks to co-create solutions with Africa by understanding its people, prioritizing sustainability, and supporting inclusive development,” Ishiba said.

The Kisarazu initiative also aligns with Japan’s domestic priorities, including addressing its aging population and revitalizing underpopulated regions.

By linking Kisarazu with Nigeria, Japan aims to establish long-term educational, cultural, and economic exchanges, positioning the city as a gateway for African engagement in Japan..
