The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is fully prepared for the 2027 general election, noting that key preparations are already underway despite delays in the amendment of the Electoral Act.
The Commission disclosed that it has completed the election timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls, even as the National Assembly is yet to conclude work on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.
INEC explained that it is awaiting the completion of the legislative process, which is expected to provide the legal framework for certain aspects of the forthcoming election.
The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during an interactive meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organisations.
According to Amupitan, the Commission has already submitted its recommendations on the proposed amendments to the National Assembly, but warned that delays in the passage and signing of the new Electoral Act could affect parts of the election timetable.
He said some activities contained in the schedule might require adjustments, depending on when the amended law eventually comes into force.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the electoral law, the INEC chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, stressing that until a new Electoral Act is enacted, INEC will continue to operate strictly within the provisions of the existing law.
