The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised its timetable for the 2027 General Election, extending the deadline for the submission of political parties’ membership registers.

In a statement issued on March 27, 2026, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the decision followed concerns raised by political parties during a meeting with the Commission held on March 24, 2026.

According to INEC, the earlier deadline scheduled between April 1 and April 21, 2026, has been adjusted to ensure compliance with statutory provisions of the Electoral Act. The Commission explained that the revision aligns the 21-day requirement stipulated by law with the timelines set by the political parties for their primaries.

INEC also announced that political parties are free to conduct their primaries within the approved window from April 23 to May 30, 2026, stressing the need for strict adherence to the schedule to ensure a seamless electoral process.

The Commission reiterated that parties must submit their membership registers not later than 21 days before their respective primaries. It further clarified that the new final deadline for submission has been extended to May 10, 2026, replacing the earlier date of April 21, 2026.

INEC urged all political parties to comply with the updated timetable, emphasizing that adherence is crucial to delivering a smooth and credible 2027 general election.
