High blood pressure has been identified as the possible cause of the tragic death of a 52-year-old man, Salihu Byezhe, who slumped during Subhi (early morning) prayers at a mosque in Gudaba village, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday.

Byezhe slumped after eating the Sahur (pre-dawn) meal preparatory to the day’s fasting when he suddenly collapsed and later gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital.

He was thereafter interred in line with Muslin rites at about midday.

Sources close to the victim said he was battling an elevated blood pressure before his sudden demise on Thursday.

Medical sources told our reporter that Byezhe could have suffered from a heart attack resulting from many reasons connected with his health status.

Meanwhile, a report by The Nation on Friday, quoted an eyewitness, Musa Dantani, who recalled that Byezhe suddenly collapsed mid-prayer in the presence of his son.

Dantani said: “Prayers were ongoing when he suddenly slumped and some Muslims inside the mosque quickly held him and conveyed him to the hospital. He was still breathing on the way, but unfortunately, he gave up upon arrival.”

A medical doctor at the hospital in Kuje later confirmed Byezhe’s death, attributing it to high blood pressure.
