Gunmen on Sunday shot dead a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator identified simply as Daniel near the Everyday Supermarket in the World Bank area of Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Daniel, said to be an indigene of Ndegwu in the Orogwe community, Owerri West Local Government Area, was attacked at his business location on Sunday evening.

A source familiar with the incident disclosed that the victim, reportedly the only son of his family, had previously been robbed and was still grappling with the financial setback before the latest attack that claimed his life.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the gunmen accosted Daniel and demanded his money bag. He was allegedly shot when he resisted, after which the assailants fled the scene with the cash.

Another resident, Philip Dike, said the killing had heightened fears that POS operators were being deliberately targeted in the New Owerri and World Bank areas.

“This young man was a POS operator stationed near the Everyday Supermarket, World Bank, Owerri. He was shot dead by armed robbers on Sunday night,” Dike said.

“There is a growing trend of POS agents being targeted within New Owerri and the World Bank. The police should act swiftly to apprehend those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice,” he added.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, DSP Henry Okoye, said he would confirm the incident and revert. However, as of the time of filing this report, no official update had been provided.
