In a dramatic turn to a controversy that has spilled far beyond the pulpit, the senior pastor of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Chris Okafor, on Sunday chose contrition over confrontation, publicly apologising to Nollywood actress Doris Ogala during a church service that quickly reverberated across social media.

Rather than addressing the allegations point by point, the cleric framed his response as a moment of personal reckoning.

Standing before worshippers, he spoke of the emotional toll of the past weeks, describing them as among the most challenging of his life, before pivoting to a broader reflection on his past decisions, personal struggles and perceived moral failings.

Okafor revisited his early life, telling congregants that he entered marriage in his early twenties under intense family pressure and without the maturity to understand its implications.

He characterised the experience as a flawed foundation that shaped later choices, admitting to long-standing struggles with forgiveness and judgment that, he said, led him into errors now being scrutinised publicly.

The pastor stopped short of engaging the specific accusations levelled by Ogala, who has alleged an affair, a broken promise of marriage, and attempts to silence her. Instead, he announced a deliberate withdrawal from public disputes, saying his focus was no longer on defending himself but on seeking forgiveness from those he may have hurt.

In an emotionally charged moment, Okafor named Ogala directly, offering an apology and declaring his willingness to make restitution where necessary. He then knelt before the congregation, a symbolic act that drew murmurs across the hall, acknowledging his imperfections and asking for prayers rather than sympathy.

The episode marks a striking shift in tone from denial to penitence, recasting a scandal that had been driven by accusation and counteraccusation into a public display of remorse.

Whether the apology will bring closure to the dispute remains uncertain, but the gesture has added a new, human dimension to a saga that has blurred the lines between faith, fame and public accountability.
