The Federal Government has commenced the payment of N44,000 in minimum wage arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) across the country.

This payment, which began earlier this week, targets ex-corps members who concluded their service before the implementation of the revised monthly allowance of N77,000 introduced earlier in the year.

Multiple recipients have confirmed on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the arrears have started reflecting in their bank accounts.

The NYSC monthly allowance was officially increased from N33,000 to N77,000 on September 25, 2024, following a directive from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, as stated in a letter signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.

This increment followed the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which raised the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 nationwide.

Although the allowance hike was approved in September 2024, the actual disbursement of the new rate only began in March 2025 due to budgetary and administrative delays. The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, attributed the postponement to insufficient budgetary provisions at the time of approval.

While corps members began receiving the new allowance in March, arrears covering the gap from July 2024 to February 2025 remained outstanding. The current payments are part of efforts by the government to settle these backlogs.
