The Nigeria Police on Thursday arraigned a 43-year-old woman, Iyabo Komolafe, identified as a suspected fake prophetess, before a Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, over alleged fraudulent practices.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Ayodele Ayeni, the defendant allegedly committed the offences on December 12, 2023; February 15, 2024; and April 2025 at Mokola Roundabout in Ibadan.
Ayeni informed the court that Komolafe, along with accomplices who are currently at large, posed as prophetesses to deceive two individuals—Waliyat Shakiru and Olawuni Akinola—into giving them money under the pretense of false spiritual revelations.
The prosecutor stated that Komolafe fraudulently obtained N300,000 in cash, a small phone worth N13,000, a bag containing N1,500 in cash, three electrical extension boxes valued at N15,000, an iPhone 12 worth N365,000, and a phone charger valued at N7,000.
These offences, Ayeni said, violate Sections 516, 419, and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38 Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Komolafe pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge, which includes conspiracy, obtaining by false pretenses, and stealing.
Presiding over the matter, Court President Mrs. S.M. Akintayo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N400,000, with two sureties in like amount. She directed that the sureties must be blood relatives of the defendant, possess valid means of identification, and provide proof of tax payment to the Oyo State Government.
The case was adjourned until June 3 for trial.
