A former UK doctor has been charged with 46 sexual offences allegedly committed against 38 patients — including children under the age of 13 — during his time working in hospitals across central England.

Staffordshire Police announced on Friday that 38-year-old Nathaniel John Spencer, of Quinton, Birmingham, has been charged with a range of serious offences, including 15 counts of sexual assault, 17 counts of assault by penetration, nine counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, three counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, and one count of attempted assault by penetration.

The charges follow a lengthy investigation by the Public Protection Unit into allegations involving patients at the Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. The alleged offences occurred between 2017 and 2021 while Spencer worked as a resident doctor in the NHS.

Regional prosecutor Ben Samples said the Crown Prosecution Service authorized the charges after reviewing extensive evidence gathered by detectives. He described the allegations as “serious sexual offences” involving both adults and children, adding that prosecutors had worked closely with police to ensure the case met the threshold for prosecution.

Police have not disclosed how many of the alleged victims are children.

Spencer is expected to appear at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 20 January 2026.
