A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a former Managing Director of the Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Robert Orya, to a cumulative 490 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of fraud amounting to N2.4 billion.

The conviction was confirmed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday. According to the anti-graft agency, Justice F.E. Messiri found Orya, who led NEXIM between 2011 and 2016, guilty on all 49 counts brought against him.

The court sentenced Orya to 10 years’ imprisonment on each of the 49 counts, bringing the total jail term to 490 years. The EFCC said the prosecution, led by its counsel Samuel Ugwuegbulam, successfully proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In its statement, the commission said it secured Orya’s conviction on February 5, 2026, for his role in a fraud involving about N2.4 billion while he served as Managing Director of the bank.

The EFCC added that the verdict followed a protracted trial during which evidence presented by the prosecution established Orya’s culpability in the offences.
