The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned the June 20, 2024 order by Justice Abubakar Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano on the Emir of Kano tussle.

This order nullified the steps taken by the Kano State Government under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, including the appointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

The appellate court ruled that Justice Liman’s order was made without jurisdiction. This decision sparked celebrations in the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Previously, Justice Liman had voided the steps taken by the current Kano State Government, which reinstalled Sanusi II, citing a violation of his earlier order to maintain the status quo.

The appellate court found that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Aminu Babba Dan Agundi on behalf of the dethroned 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero.

Friday’s ruling ended the long-running legal dispute.
