Eight persons were killed on Monday after terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attackers also reportedly destroyed a key bridge linking the Luma–Babana–Agwara communities, cutting off a vital route used by residents travelling to the Babana border market, which holds every Monday.
Sources said the incident occurred in the early hours of the day, throwing the affected communities into panic. A dependable source from the area told our correspondent that the bridge was bombed at about 5am.
According to the source, the assailants stormed Borgu Local Government Area and detonated explosives on the Luma–Babana bridge, effectively halting movement across the communities.
“The bridge has stopped villagers from crossing to other parts of the area, especially those heading to the Babana Monday Market for trading,” the source said.
The terrorists were also said to have planted and detonated explosives between Rafingiwa and Babana, as well as between Woro and Kaiama, forcing many residents to flee their homes for safety.
Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area, Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, confirmed the attack when contacted.
“There was actually an attack by the bandits, and we are trying to verify the magnitude. A bridge was damaged,” he said.
He added that officials had been dispatched to the affected communities to assess the situation and determine the extent of the destruction.
