The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a strong warning to Nigerian travellers, especially those embarking on international trips, urging them not to assist strangers in carrying or checking in unknown luggage.

In a public advisory released on Saturday, the agency emphasized the growing trend of drug traffickers exploiting unsuspecting passengers to smuggle narcotics and prohibited substances across borders. According to the NDLEA, many innocent travellers have found themselves in trouble with foreign law enforcement after unknowingly transporting illegal items.

“Helping someone carry a bag or package without knowing its contents can have life-changing consequences,” the NDLEA spokesperson said. “No matter how convincing the person may seem—whether a fellow passenger, acquaintance, or friend—travellers must firmly decline such requests.”

The agency also urged travellers to stay vigilant at airports and report any suspicious behaviour to security authorities immediately. With drug enforcement agencies in many countries adopting stricter screening measures, the NDLEA warned that ignorance would not be accepted as an excuse in cases of drug smuggling.

The warning comes amid increased efforts by the agency to combat transnational drug trafficking and protect Nigerian citizens abroad. Earlier this year, several Nigerians were arrested in Asian and Middle Eastern countries after drugs were found in their luggage—many claiming they had agreed to carry bags for others without knowing the contents.

The NDLEA reiterated that its goal is not only to curb drug trafficking but also to protect innocent travellers from falling into legal traps abroad. Travellers are advised to pack their own bags, never leave luggage unattended, and avoid helping anyone with items they didn’t personally inspect.
