The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the tragic killing of a police officer, Inspector O. O. Ojonogba, by suspected gunmen in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Inspector Ojonogba, popularly known as “Ade,” was attached to the Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Area, Hon. Dagidi Andaye. According to reports, he was murdered in his sleep by unidentified assailants who broke into the chairman’s residence while the chairman was away on official duty in Asaba.
Sources said the incident occurred around 3 to 4 a.m., when the attackers entered the compound through the generator powerhouse, which was running at the time. Once inside, they proceeded directly to the room where Inspector Ojonogba, attached to PMF 51, was asleep. He was shot at close range in the neck and died instantly.
After killing the officer, the gunmen broke into the main house by damaging a burglar-proof barrier and entering through the dining area. They then stormed the children’s room, demanding valuables, including cash and the mother’s jewellery.
The intruders reportedly fired multiple shots into the ceiling and walls, terrifying the children, before stealing several mobile phones, two iPads, and a laptop.
Sources added that the attackers returned shortly after, possibly searching for more items, but left when they found nothing else of value.
The children were left physically unharmed but deeply traumatised. Inspector Ojonogba’s lifeless body was discovered shortly after the attack.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed the killing and said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
