Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition-backed party he is widely expected to champion in the run-up to the 2027 presidential race.
Atiku made the announcement on Monday via his X account, posting a photo of himself proudly holding his ADC membership card alongside a succinct caption: “It’s official.”
The move comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, following what he described as a deepening internal crisis within the party. His resignation took place just two weeks after the ADC was unveiled by opposition figures as their preferred platform for the next election.
In a letter dated July 16, addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a decisive shift in the PDP’s direction away from its founding ideals. “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he wrote.
Atiku expressed gratitude to the PDP for the support and opportunities he received over the years, and wished the party and its leaders well in their future endeavours.
His formal entry into the ADC signals a clear realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape, positioning him at the forefront of a unified opposition as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
