The Nigerian Army has initiated a full investigation into the alleged withdrawal of soldiers from Maga community shortly before 25 schoolgirls were abducted in Kebbi State.

A senior military source at the Army Headquarters told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the probe is already underway, following concerns raised by Governor Nasir Idris over claims that troops stationed at Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, were withdrawn ahead of the Nov. 17 attack.

The source said the inquiry would uncover who authorized the withdrawal and whether standard operational procedures were observed.

According to him, the Army views the incident “with utmost seriousness” and will impose sanctions on any personnel found negligent, regardless of rank.

“The investigation is thorough and transparent. If any officer or soldier is found culpable in the unauthorised withdrawal or any act of negligence, appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be taken,” he said.

He added that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, had reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to professionalism and the protection of communities nationwide.

The public was urged to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its full course, with assurances that the findings would be made public in the interest of accountability.

The source further noted that troops were working closely with other security agencies and the Kebbi State Government to rescue the abducted schoolgirls and bolster security in vulnerable areas.
