Ten states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria’s 36 states have fully implemented the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) as of 31 December 2024.

Data from the National Pension Commission of Nigeria show that Lagos leads the compliant states, which include the FCT, Osun, Kaduna, Ekiti, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Benue, Anambra and Jigawa.

Two Niger Delta states, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, join Kwara, Plateau and Yobe in the list of states that are yet to commence implementation of the scheme, according to PENCOM.

It said, “These states are yet to enact their CPS laws and commence implementation.”

Meanwhile, although 20 other states have enacted laws to adopt CPS, PENCOM said they are yet to take significant steps towards implementation.

States that are yet to take steps to implement the laws include Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe and Imo.

Others are Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kobi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara.

PenCom urged the states yet to take significant steps towards implementation of the laws to accelerate the process.
