The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced plans to go on strike starting Thursday, following what they describe as harsh treatment of teachers by Governor Alex Otti.

This decision comes after several meetings, including a session held on March 4 with national, state, and local representatives, followed by another meeting on March 28. The union had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum, followed by a seven-day notice to the governor, demanding action on their grievances.

In a statement released on Saturday, the union, led by Chairman C. Madu Friday, and Secretary Mrs. Nnenna Okonkwo, expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s failure to address key issues affecting teachers’ welfare. The union criticized the exclusion of the Teachers’ Salary Structure and minimum wage from the March salary payments, while other unions received their special pay arrangements.

They also pointed out that despite the governor’s approval for extending retirement age and service years for teachers, retirements were still happening, and promotions were being handled inconsistently.

Additionally, the union raised concerns over the non-payment of arrears to basic school teachers, who had not been considered for arrears payments like their counterparts in SEMB.

The union voiced frustration at what it called “stringent measures” against teachers and set a deadline for the government to resolve the issues or face industrial action.

Chairman Friday confirmed that the ultimatum and notices had been officially submitted to government authorities, with the strike scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 24, 2025, unless the situation changes.
