A tragic road accident on the Zaria-Kano highway has claimed the lives of 21 passengers following a collision between a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a DAF truck.
The fatal crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. on Sunday and was confirmed in a statement by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC crash investigation team revealed that the accident was caused by a route violation.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace bus was reported to have driven against the flow of traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.
“Tragically, 21 people—comprising 19 male adults and two female adults—lost their lives out of the 24 involved in the crash,” Ogungbemide stated.
“The remaining three victims sustained injuries and were rescued.
“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Nasarawa Hospital in Kano.
Emergency responders, including FRSC personnel, have since cleared the accident scene and restored normal traffic flow.
